PAUL JACOBS

Candidate for Rowner & Holbrook

This year marks 25 years since I made Gosport my home, moving here with my family for work. In 2001, I joined the Portsmouth News as a photographer and went on to spend nearly 18 years in local journalism. In 2015, I became self-employed, a move that brought its own challenges but gave me the freedom to focus on the issues that really matter to local people.

Through my work, wasteful council spending has always stood out. My investigation into the money poured into the Criterion was a turning point. Every pound spent on that project has come at the expense of other local priorities — cancelled improvements, reduced services, and rising charges such as parking fees. By the time the café opens, costs will exceed £2.3 million, with millions more still needed for the theatre and cinema. That was when I decided that complaining wasn’t enough — it was time to get involved.

Gosport Reform UK campaigners are ordinary residents who care deeply about the town. We have no hidden agendas or pet projects — just a shared determination to see common sense, transparency and accountability return to local decision-making.

I’m known for a no-nonsense, straight-talking approach. Being careful with money has been a necessity all my life. I was married with a child by the age of 20, both of us earning minimum wage, and finances were tight. We moved to Gosport at 25 with two children, and this town has been our home ever since. This year, we celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary — a reminder of how quickly time passes and how rooted we are here.

I love walking along Stokes Bay and appreciate how lucky we are to live by the sea. But we cannot ignore what’s happening nationally. With rising illegal Channel crossings and the £101 million redevelopment of Haslar nearing completion, Gosport will feel the impact. Reform UK offers a clear, no-nonsense voice on these issues.

I campaign because Gosport deserves honesty, responsible spending and leadership that puts residents first.
